In December last year, the Department of Transport introduced a ‘Fairer Fares’ package. This means reduced fares for buses, trains, ferries and trams across South East Queensland. Now there’s even more of an incentive to travel to work by public transport. We look at what’s changed and how to make the most of this new, cost-effective system.

What’s Changed?

There have been a number of changes to the public transport system across South East Queensland since late last year. Fairer Fares has introduced reduced fares for all zones meaning that around 93% of passengers currently using public transport will pay less.

In addition, fare zones have been changed, reducing the original 23 zones into eight wider zones, so travel to and from local areas is cheaper.

The off-peak discount period of 20% has been extended to between 7 pm to 6 am and 8.30 to 3.30 pm from Monday to Friday and on weekends. Children between the ages of 5 – 14 can now enjoy free weekend travel with an orange child go card, and senior citizens and pensioners will keep their ‘One, Two FREE’ travel discount.

The ‘9 and FREE’ scheme has been scrapped, and instead, you can make eight paid journeys on your go card within a week (Monday to Sunday) and then travel for half price for the rest of the week. This change benefits a larger number of people. There will also be concession fares on public transport for people receiving Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance introduced during 2017.

What Do I Need to Do?

There are no changes to go cards with the introduction of Fairer Fares. Fares are calculated automatically when you touch on and touch off.

What are the Benefits of the Fairer Fares Package?

The fare reform definitely makes it more attractive for people to leave their cars (or even sell your car and use public transport instead) at home and get onto public transport to commute to work. The package has been designed to ensure that the maximum number of commuters benefit from the reduced fares by lowering their weekly cost of living.

According to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, the package will also help to ease road congestion by taking an estimated 7 million cars off the roads every year.
