The Scenic Rim area is a World Heritage Listed Rainforest found 60 minutes drive south of the CBD. It enjoys wide open roads winding between dry plains and lush valleys. You could easily spend a long weekend here just touring between wineries and cruising between country pubs. There are plenty of places to stay, including luxury lodges and glamping spots to suit all budgets. The Scenic Rim has six national parks, and activities range from treetop walks and hot air ballooning to art galleries and hang gliding. These make for interesting pit stops to give you a break from driving.
Known as ‘Australia’s Salad Bowl’ for its fertile soil, the Lockyer Valley is a 60-minute drive west of the CBD, nestled at the foot of the Great Dividing Range. You could easily spend a weekend here driving the Cuppa Tea Trail, a tourist drive visiting various lakes, lagoons and wetlands. You could also explore the Wine & Rock tourist drive, visit roadside stalls and take in the valley views from the Schultz Lookout. Alternatively, if you have a 4WD, go offroading and get back to nature.
Somerset, with its rolling hills, lakes and forests has a lot to offer for the leisurely driver. Just 60 minutes north-west of Brisbane, it’s very popular for its boating, fishing and watersports. But if you want to spend a lazy weekend driving around this region’s highlights then there’s more than enough land-based activities to keep you busy. Wineries, art trails and even paintball are a few activities to delve into. There are three drive routes you might like to try: The Northern Drive, The Southern Drive, and the Churches and Memorials Trail.
Just 30 minutes north of Brisbane, the Moreton Bay Region includes Mt Mee, Mt Glorious and Mt Nebo in D’Aguilar National Park. You can explore these natural wonders on a scenic drive, stopping off to take in the views from lookouts or swim in a waterhole. Alternatively, visit seaside villages or drive over to Bribie Island for a swim, a casual lunch or a boat cruise. Don’t forget to bring your tent, you can camp out here!
Redlands is easily accessible from Brisbane CBD, just a 30-minute drive south-east. This laid back region offers beachside villages, history, nature and a strong foodie culture. Scenic drives include Southern Moreton Bay Drive (St Helena Island and Fort Lytton) and North Stradbroke Island (gorgeous beaches and whale watching between May and November).
